Bowmansgreen Primary School

Art and Design

The outward, visual expression of our inner selves.

Intent

At Bowmansgreen Primary School, we aspire to develop passion and appreciation of Art and Design. We value the importance of Art and Design in enabling children to explore their ideas and emotions by experimenting, inventing, and creating their own varied works using a range of materials. A high-quality Art and Design education should inspire, engage and challenge children - enabling pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through colour, texture, form and pattern.

It is our belief that a broad, skills-based Art and Design curriculum should allow our pupils to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links to different genres of Art and Design in our society. Art contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement, and self-reflection. Moreover, it enables pupils to develop a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them and therefore links strongly to our school values.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Bowmansgreen Primary School is based on the National Curriculum, through Kapow Primary, Art and Design – Condensed Curriculum and linked to units which ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject.

Our curriculum is structured in a way that allows our pupils to build on knowledge and skills learnt in earlier year groups so that they can draw upon prior learning to help consolidate new learning and access new skills.  In line with the National Curriculum, the topics studied in each year group enable our pupils to develop a love and appreciation of Art and Design and reach their full potential as active artists and designers.

The children are taught Art and Design through termly units.  Areas covered are based on drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design. More details can be found in our long-term plan.

EYFS

Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. They have opportunities to learn to:

  • Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials
  • Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in order to manipulate and create different effects
  • Use different media and materials to express their own ideas
  • Explore colour and use for a particular purpose
  • Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately
  • Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary

Key Stage 1

Pupils are taught:

  • To use a range of materials creatively to design and create artworks
  • To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • To develop a wide range of art techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work
  •  Key Stage 2
  • Pupils are taught:
  • To develop their techniques, including their control and use of media and materials.
  • To be creative and experiment; building an increasing awareness of different kinds of arts and crafts
  • To improve their mastery of techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture, with a range of materials
  • About great artists, architects and designers throughout history

Following each piece of work pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own work and that of peers and to consider changes and improvements as part of self-assessment and critical thinking. Teacher assessment is carried out at the end of each unit in discussion with our pupils. The subject leader also collects termly pupil voice information through discussions with pupils. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. This data is analysed on a termly basis to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment. Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within the Early Learning Goals and progress is tracked using their individual learning journeys on Tapestry.

Impact

At Bowmansgreen our curriculum focuses on developing proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture, with the overall aim of developing a rigorous understanding, critical awareness and inspiration through Art and Design. As they progress through the school, pupils will become proficient in communicating what they see, feel and think and expressing ideas and critical thinking about their own work and that of others, using the language of Art and Design. The creativity of all our pupils is celebrated through communal displays and our school website. Through our rich and broad curriculum pupils will also develop their understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages by studying a diverse range of male and female artists and designers throughout history.
